(Green River) There are some trails that are more of a path, even if the word “trail” is in the name. The Green River Trail is one of them. That’s not to say you shouldn’t hike or walk this one, but it’s important to know what you’re getting into if you were expecting to fill up your Nalgene and get your hiking boots dirty.

The trail is an easy hike in Green River on a paved path that begins next to the John Wesley Powell Museum, which is a fantastic little place to spend an hour or two looking at the exhibits and understanding some of the history around here. You even park in the museum’s parking lot to access this trail.

The trail itself is only 0.6 miles long, but it’s a great place to stretch your legs, take the kids or dogs (or both) for a walk, or work off those extra fries from Ray’s Tavern nearby.

Since this trail is paved, it’s also a great place for those who are mobility challenged or for super senior adventurers to get outside and go. It’s flat for the most part. The path starts where there is a wooden entrance with a sign that say “Green River Trail.” It’s toward the back of the museum. Just make your way to other side of the wooden trailhead and off you go.

The views of the Green River and the rocky bluffs in the distance are peaceful and grand. There are also some birds and ducks that make their way to the river. When they’re chirping and singing to each other, it only adds to the serene environment.

There’s a rock at the beginning honoring Gaetano and Caterina Morelli. They came to this area from Italy in the early 1900’s to live the American Dream. They raised their family here. Their grandkids eventually donated the land to the museum in honor of their grandparents. I love the picture of them on the rock.

There’s a little bench about halfway down the trail if you need to sit down and relax, of if you just want to be surrounded by the peace of it all. It’s not too far away from the main road and bridge, so when loud vehicles pass by, you’ll still hear them. But for the most part, Green River is still a sleepy town where you can get away for a bit.
When the pavement stops, the trails stops. Just turn around and come back. At the trailhead, there is a sign saying they would like to add to the trail and make it longer. When you get back, you can go under the bridge to get closer to the water if you want. Or sit in one of outside chairs at the museum. It’s a great spot to eat lunch or have a picnic.

No, this isn’t a challenging hike at all. You probably won’t need to seriously consider bringing water unless it’s in the middle of summer. And you won’t burn off too many french fry calories. But it is a great spot to get out, breathe, and enjoy being outside.

On a personal note, the parking area behind the museum… where the grass is behind the hotel… will always be a special place for me. When my dog Timber was really sick and we weren’t sure what was wrong yet, she pottied #2 in the car by mistake and felt so bad. It was runny and everywhere. I had left her in the car for a few minutes after we had gone potty, but when I came back she had gone again. She was sitting in the back feeling guilty. So, I went back there and just hugged her and told her it was okay. It was in this lot where I cleaned the inside of the car with water, napkins, and paper towels. She played in the grass a little while I did so. We didn’t know it yet, but her pancreas had failed and she couldn’t digest food on her own. We eventually figured it out and she took a special enzyme powder with her meals to digest the food, but those were some tough days. On the day I took the photos for this post, about a year after her death, I brought my little pendant of her ashes back here to have a smile. Timber is missed and will forever be loved.
