(Kanab) Okay. I know what you're thinking. This is supposed to be a section on small town restaurants and I'm telling you about a soda shop? And not just a soda shop, but a soda shop inside a gas station?? Why, yes. Yes I am. And if you visit this soda shop, I think you'll visit here more than once whenever you're in the Kanab area. The soda here is as good as any soda shop in Utah. I don't know why... it just is!
First things first, Strawz is located inside the KTown 89 Food and Fuel south of Kanab on your way to Fredonia, Arizona. If you're heading to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon from Kanab, you'll pass this gas station on the left side of the road. Kylie loves icy sodas whenever we're on a road trip. When we were in Kanab, she wanted to stop somewhere for a soda and figured it would have to be at a gas station because we weren't finding any soda shops. In these cases, we usually head to the local Maverik. We just happened to pass by this gas station and saw the Strawz logo on the left side of the building. So, we turned around to check it out. We are so glad we did.
As soon as you walk in, you'll notice all the usual candy bars and bottled sodas almost any gas station has. But you'll also see some tables, a freezer with some food, a hamburger cooking machine, hotdog warmer, popcorn machine, and a little table with all the fixings to make your food just the way you like it. We even saw some breakfast burritos and chimichangas. It has a cozy feel. It's a good place to get a quick bite to eat before hitting the road. And it's a really good place to enjoy the soda you order at the front counter.
I love all the fun, creative names of sodas at soda shops. Strawz goes with a Western theme which fits the characteristics of Kanab and the Western movies filmed in the area. Of course, John Wayne has a drink named after him. It's coke, cranberry, and Raspberry. There's also the City Slicker, Little Hollywood, Cactus Dream, Tumbleweed, and all sorts of Western-type names. I'm a simple guy and ordered a diet Mountain Dew with sugar free vanilla. Kylie got a half coke, half diet coke, with sugar free vanilla. The first time I visited, I got the Regulators (Pepsi and Vanilla Cream) and it was delicious.
They also have a hot chocolate menu, which is pretty cool. Most soda shops have hot chocolate, but I haven't seen too many of them where you can order all kinds of different flavored hot cocoa. I tried the cinnamon roll and it was perfect.
If you're someone who enjoys icy sodas on your road trip, I think you'll really like this place. The flavors are good and it seems like the carbonation is turned up a little bit because the bubbles are crisp. I like when the bubbles get in your teeth and mouth and you can taste the crispness. This place gets in right, in my opinion. Perhaps you're not a fan of all the carbonation and that's okay. I still think this place is worth a visit when you're in Kanab.
There's even a little lunch counter at the front window where you can do some people watching while eating your food. It's fun to see the cowboys saying hi to each other. On the day we visited, the workers were decorating the place for Christmas. You can see the Santa and the little Christmas tree on the counter. Like I said earlier, this place has done a good job of making it feel cozy.
There is even a little dog park outside Strawz for all the good boys and girls. It's fenced in with a gate and even has some doggy potty bags. It was a good break for Timber to sniff around a little bit. If you ask the workers, they'll make a pupcup for your dog.
Maybe part of why Utah always scores so high in quality of life lists is because of our soda shops. You don't find them in many states, but they're all over Utah. There are some great shops out there, and when you're in Kanab, visiting Strawz will be a great addition to all your regular stops.
