(Brigham City) There are a lot of fancy sandwich places in Utah. Places with touchscreen kiosks, mood lighting, and employees who call themselves “sandwich artists.” But when I want a sandwich that tastes like someone’s grandma actually made the bread that morning, it's tough to beat Old Grist Mill in Brigham City.

This little bakery deli smells like heaven and flour had a baby. As soon as you walk in, you’ll find people carefully circling items on an order sheet like they’re taking a high-stakes quiz. It’s a charming, slightly chaotic ritual. Sometimes hungry customers rushing to order forget to return the pens, which just adds to the fun of it all. It's also a good thing "provolone" is something you just have to circle instead of spell out.

Here’s my secret hack for a delicious sandwich: Turkey, Swiss, and mayo on a bagel. Yes, a bagel. Check to see if there are any left in the glass counter. If there's one still in there, go for it. If not, sourdough is a solid Plan B for me. It's flavorful and strong enough to hold everything together like a proper sandwich should be. Being from New York originally, I'm sort of a sandwich snob. Don't even get me started on pizza, which they have here, too. They also have hot sandwiches, if you're in a mood for something to warm your belly.

Kylie and I love coming to Old Grist Mill. It is affordable, fast, and it tastes so good. She usually heads straight for the bread rack, scouting out loaves like a carb-fueled treasure hunter. White, wheat, multigrain, cinnamon drop, even pumpkin spice bread if it's in season. If it ends in “bread,” chances are she’s got it in her arms by the time I’m halfway through my cookie. Oh, yeah. Cookies! They come with your meal. Just circle the one you want on your paper order sheet. The snickerdoodle is as big as your face and twice as satisfying. I usually go with the macadamia.

If you’re in the mood for something sweet, the cinnamon rolls here are a local legend. Soft, sticky, and covered in just the right amount of frosting. It's the kind of dessert you buy “for later” and then finish in the car before you leave the parking lot. We’ve all been there. Kylie loves the raspberry cinnamon roll while I prefer the regular stuff. They're both good.

When I’m working in the area, I usually stop in to grab a sandwich and snap a photo of the bread shelf to send Kylie. It’s kind of our routine. “Do you want white? Or should I get the wheat again?” We all know I usually come home with both. As well a bag of dinner rolls.

Old Grist Mill bakes all their bread fresh daily from wheat they mill themselves. Yes, they actually mill just like the old days. I don't know about the other locations (Logan, Ogden, Kaysville), but in the Brigham City shop, they bake it all right there. You can see the equipment. It’s wholesome, hearty, and you can absolutely taste the difference. No preservatives, no weird ingredients. Just honest-to-goodness bread.

If you’re near Brigham City, or any of their other locations, it's worth a stop to try out. Heads up, though, it’s usually packed around lunchtime and for good reason. This place has great sandwiches, great prices, and great bread. Enjoy the cinnamon roll in your car in the parking lot.
