(Milford) Don't you just love finding a good place to eat you weren't even looking for? One that turned out to be exactly what you needed? Scotty's Diner is that place for me. Let me explain why this place will always make me smile.

My colleague Mark Less and I had spent several days covering the Cottonwood Fire near Beaver for work. Like most breaking news stories, the days all started to blend together. Deadlines replaced schedules, hotel rooms became home, and meals were usually whatever we could grab between live shots. When we finally had an evening off, we didn't want to do much. We just wanted to feel normal again. Since Mark had never been to Milford, we pointed the car west and made the short drive from Beaver.

As we rolled into town during golden hour, I could already tell we weren't in a hurry anymore.
Mark, the photographer I was working with, did what photographers do. He took pictures of railroad tracks and power lines stretching toward the setting sun. I was perfectly happy just enjoying the slower pace and the fact that, for one evening at least, we weren't in a rush.

Eventually, we both realized we were hungry. I did a quick online search and found a place called Scotty's Diner. Being from New York originally, I grew up on diners. I love them. So, off we went. Despite the name, don't expect a traditional sit-down diner with booths and waitresses carrying coffee pots. Scotty's is more of a classic small-town burger stand. You order through a window, there's a convenient drive-thru, and several covered picnic tables outside if you'd rather stay awhile.

After days of eating in the car or back at the hotel, sitting outside sounded pretty great. I ordered the Sticky Chicken Sandwich with mozzarella sticks. We have a rule that calories don't count on work trips, which is good, because the sandwich was very good. The sticky sauce had just the right balance of sweet and savory without overpowering the chicken. The mozzarella sticks with marinara sauce were pretty good for something that had zero calories (again, the rule).

Mark went with the Scotty's Melt. He enjoyed it, although I think he was expecting something a little closer to a traditional burger. We both laughed that sometimes asking a few questions isn't the worst idea. He still ate the whole thing.

The food arrived quickly, the service was genuinely friendly, and for a little while we simply sat outside, ate dinner, and watched people come and go. A few customers pulled through the drive-thru while others relaxed at the picnic tables like we did. It wasn't especially busy, but it didn't need to be. It felt comfortable.

Milford doesn't have dozens of restaurants to choose from, and honestly, that's part of what makes places like Scotty's special. It's a locally owned spot serving good food at reasonable prices and where it seems like you're encouraged to slow down instead of rushing through your meal. Sometimes that's exactly what you need.

Whether you're driving across western Utah, exploring nearby ghost towns, photographing an evening sunset, or just looking for a good burger after a long day, Scotty's is worth the stop. For Mark and I, Scotty's Diner in Milford wasn't just dinner. It was a chance to sit outside, talk about something other than work, enjoy a good meal, and let the clock tick for a little while. Sometimes, that's the best thing a restaurant can serve.
